From Oregon with Love - Surfer Cam Richards and partner Sophie Turned ditched sunny Florida for a spontaneous weeklong bike-and-surf adventure down the rugged Oregon Coast. Their journey was captured in a film presented by Surfer and produced by Modify Content.

Two bikes riding on coastal highway

They pedaled through rain, wind and wild storms while camping, exploring little towns, and chasing waves on old-school bikes with a support van backup. The couple hauled all their gear with Burley Coho XC cargo trailers and cargo accessories.

Most surfboard holders mount off the side of the bike or behind the rear tire and keep the board upright. In windy coastal conditions, that setup can turn a surfboard into a sail, which makes riding narrow sections of Highway 101 this time of year dangerous. Even with a support vehicle nearby, the goal was for Cam and Sophie to carry everything themselves: sleeping bags, pillows, clothes, wetsuits, snacks, and water in case they found themselves on their own between stops.

The Coho XC created a stable platform that let them organize the gear into three separate waterproof bags while still accommodating a surfboard. That meant each pit stop was quick and efficient, whether they were rolling into a windswept beach or a rainy campground.

The quick-release hitch on the Coho XC turned out to be just as valuable as the carrying capacity. Most nights they arrived at camp in the rain, so Cam and Sophie could quickly unhitch the trailer and roll it onto a covered porch or deck to unload. Without that quick release, they would have been stuck making multiple trips back and forth in the rain with loose gear.

Highlights included great surfing in Pacific City, cheese stops in Tillamook, sea-lion encounters, cozy campfires, scenic picnics, and surf sessions in dramatic winter conditions.

The slower pace, unpredictable weather and raw beauty of Oregon made the trip as much about connection and adventure as about scoring waves. We’re grateful to have contributed to this project and to have played a role in helping folks ride their way, surfboard included.
